Fall Volleyball

This fall league just wasn't our league. Our biggest problem was coordinating our teammates so we wouldn't have to forfeit each week (we did end up forfeiting one night when I had Open House and JJ was following a surgeon -- I completely forgot about volleyball that night!). At the end of the season we had NOT won a single game. We are a team that plays just for fun, but it was still a bit frustrating and uncharacteristic of our team. When the last night came, we bid adieu and hoped we'd meet up with our teammates even though we wouldn't have volleyball weekly. The worker, H, mentioned that the tournament was the next weekend. We explained that we hadn't won a single game and were sure we wouldn't be in the tournament. She said that everyone got to be in the tournament this year -- but it was single elimination.

We concentrated our efforts and made sure we had a full team for the following Thursday. When we got there we found out that not only was it single elimination, but it was a single game each time too! One game up to thirty, rally scoring. We played our first game -- we were determined to "bring it" this time! A bit to our surprise, we won! Second game. This team had the best record (and had a bye the first round). Oh, and about this time MVJ decided she was NOT content in her stroller and could only be comforted by DADDY (we had three girls and four boys -- so the boys were rotating out), so he was out of commission. When he came back from a quick diapey change in the car, he found out we had indeed won the second game as well! Game three. Duh duh duuuuuh. We played our little hearts out with MVJ screaming in the background as H, the worker briskly walking her around in the stroller so JJ could play. AND WE WON! Tourney champs with a record of 0-6. We have the BRIGHT ORANGE shirts to prove it.

Bye bye Volleyball

Early evening on Wednesday (volleyball day), AO texted to say she wasn't feeling well and would not be at volleyball! Oh no! Our last night and we would be short a girl? The rule is there can't be more guys than girls, so I tried frantically to get a girl to play with us. My wonderful long-term sub (and new RT) said she'd do it! Yay! So, when we got to the courts, the worker ran up to us and said that we were in a tie to get into the championship game. Woohoo! We had to do well! The team we were playing was undefeated for the WHOLE SEASON. They were way, way, way too good for the B (just for fun) league. We're talking bump, set, spike every single return. All serves over. That kind of thing. We're fairly decent, but we're just out for fun and have all kinds of skill level, from beginner to JJ's level. ; ) We quickly lost the first two games and decided to play the third for fun. It started raining and everyone scattered pretty quickly when the worker ran over again telling us that the team we were tied with had lost too! Maybe there was still hope for our annual t-shirt. After mulling over some TCBY, the head guy called me the next morning to tell me there was actually a four-way tie for second place (and a spot in the championship game), but looking at our records against the other three teams, we ended up on the losing end of the tie. Boo! But yay to an awesome season! Fall league here we come!

Whah Waa (the Debbie Downer sound)

We lost our first volleyball match last night. Boo! It's actually our first loss at all in the new bracket (ahem... the gold one...). AND we lost to a team that has not won a single game let alone whole match in the new bracket. BOOOOOOO. I played the first game and we lost by just a little bit. It's rally scoring, and it was 26-29. We had a side-out and they won. I hate losing on those terms. The second game I was sidelined with Chi-chi and we won. No drawing correlations allowed! The third game I hardly saw at all because my little darling became STARVING and I was in the van feeding my ravenous beast. JJ said they got on a roll and won by a landslide. Boo. We came home at about 9pm to watch Top Chef Masters only to find out it was on at 8 and re-aired at 10. I put Cheechers to bed, drank a delicious banana smoothie made by JJ, and decided I was going to stay up and watch the 10 showing (can you tell we are one of the poor saps sans TiVo?). I was asleep by 10:30 and JJ woke me up to turn off the TV some time after 11. : )

Say what?

The other day JJ got asked to play on our friend JAP's volleyball team because they were a guy short. I went along for encouragement. There was this guy on another team who just seemed really proud of himself. He was probably about 45 and you could tell he fake baked and worked out quite a bit. He and his team come in between games and are chatting by the bleachers. I hear him say, "That was the best sex we've had all season." What? Is that really appropriate? Then he goes on to talk more about the "sets" they've been having. Phew!

Have I told you my most embarrassing volleyball story? A few summers ago, we had just finished playing volleyball and were standing around in a circle chatting. I was ready to head out so I tapped JJ on his butt and whispered, "Let's go." I looked up to find out that JJ was no longer next to me. The guy (D) whose butt I had just tapped looked down at me and said, "Where do you want to go?" I seriously cannot look poor D straight in the face anymore. Good thing he has a great sense of humor!
